80 days (August 14th to December 20th 2024)

Background

The IFRC Solferino Academy is a Think and Do Tank specialising in Innovation, Leadership and Strategic Foresight.

We focus primarily on how to support the IFRC network of National Societies to transform for emerging contemporary contexts and to be fit for the challenges and opportunities of the future.

We try to support systems, cultures and leadership that help us be more anticipatory, agile and innovative and a more effective, just and sustainable network.

The Solferino Academy is an integral part of the IFRC and its National Society Development Services working to help achieve the IFRC Strategy 2030 and the Agenda for Renewal

Some of its current initiatives include:

  • Limitless, IFRC Youth Innovation Academy. The Solferino Academy is leading the content development, virtual workshops management, mentoring and other aspects of this year-long initiative.
  • Movement engagement with the themes of the International Conference
  • Mid-Term Review of Strategy 2030
  • Strategic Foresight Capability Building
  • Senior leadership transformation support
  • Promoting innovation and enhancing learning through digital media

The NSDS Department is seeking a consultant to lead the design and development of digital visual products, over all visual design and web-based tools to support engagement across a range of its activities, particularly the mid-term review of IFRC Strategy 2030, The engagement of Movement stakeholders for the International Conference and the IFRC Limitless Youth Innovation Academy.

The mid-term review of Strategy 2030 seeks to explore progress on the Strategy to date, how the world is changing since the strategy was drafted and elements of the strategy that should be prioritised in the remaining period to 2030. It involves a consultation process with National Society stakeholders, the majority of which is done digitally and requires a range of web-based platforms to deliver.

The Limitless program is funded by a number of major partners and provides support to youth volunteers and staff of the IFRC network to design and implement innovative projects to address the climate and environmental crises.

The International Conference of the Movement requires engagement with Movement stakeholders including communities on the themes of the conference in the lead-up to and during the conference itself.

The position is full-time until end of October and part-time after that, and home-based.

Key tasks and responsibilities

The consultant will lead in designing visual style and execution of a range of products to help attract engagement throughout the network for both initiatives.  There will also be a need from time to time to edit and publish videos, or design animations products for videos.  The work also requires a number of web and digital-based tools to help provide channels for stakeholders of the IFRC network to contribute to our initiatives, as well as some creative communications tools to help with driving broader engagement. 

This is a consultancy to support the IFRC Solferino Academy teams to deliver high-quality results for funded initiatives.

Primary tasks

In collaboration with the IFRC Solferino Academy team, in particular communications colleagues and content leads;

  • Design all visual design and branding needs for products that the Solferino Academy requires in particular to facilitate the engagement of diverse communities into dialogue.
  • Contribute to designing creative digital strategies that will cut through to reach a large number of people in all countries of the world.
  • Build videos and if required edit the video contributions of others to represent brand consistency and professional designs that faithfully represent the voices of the network.
  • Manage the solferinoacademy.com website including to build web-based pages, surveys, platforms and others where content can be conveyed and solicited from the network.
  • Help design innovative reporting and feedback formats and platforms
  • Identify, manage and help source additional digital platforms as needed.
  • Assist with moderating and updating various Solferino Academy social media channels and produce/encourage engaging content, ensuring quality also in user-generated posts.
  • Work closely with communications teams (Solferino Academy, IFRC, National Societies, external partners) to ensure all appropriate communications products are developed and disseminated in a timely fashion.
  • Attend various project team meetings as requested.
  • Assist with drafting documents, reports, letters, and other project-related collateral where required.

Consultant specifications;

Key technical skills and competencies we are seeking;

  • Ability to convert complex information into simple and compelling visual storytelling;
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and design packages (or similar), and knowledge of emerging visual design tools;
  • Web design and strong development proficiency with Word Press;
  • Expertise with digital and social media communications and digital platform engagement
  • Expertise with a range of digital tools that enable registration and content engagement from the network.
  • Expertise with video editing, production and design, including narrative storytelling
  • Experience with cross-media campaigning, signage design, type design, animation
  • Some experience with event design and particularly visual elements

Other skills, competencies, experience and qualifications;

  • Expertise in graphic/visual design, marketing, knowledge management and/or internal communications strategies;
  • Highly developed graphic concept creation
  • Highly familiar with the Red Cross and Red Crescent network and with the Solferino Academy and its approaches to campaigning, communicating, events and branding;
  • Excellent written and oral communication, organizational and presentation skills in English, proficiency in one other IFRC language (written and spoken French, Spanish or Arabic) is essential also
  • Proactive attitude to problem solving. “Can do attitude” required;
  • Highly creative, dynamic and flexible and willingness to experiment with new approaches
  • Knowledge of and ability to keep up with trends and practices in digital communications
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and function as a supportive member of a multi-functional team
  • A university degree or other study in communications and multimedia is preferable, but not essential, practical experience, creativity and passion is highly valued.

Reporting to:

Innovation Lead (Head of Solferino Academy) on behalf of the Director NSDS but working closely with a range of teams in the NSDS department and the wider IFRC Secretariat if required.

Time period:

From August 14th 2024 – December 20th 2024 – 80 days equivalent

Remuneration:

Please provide a daily rate quote in Swiss Francs.
