Advice and Assistance

I want to participate, I’m looking for inspiration around me

    Circular economy

Think out of the box and try to implement the 5R Strategy:
Refuse, Reduce, Recycle, Reuse and Recover

    • How can we reduce our waste? Keep in mind that the best waste is no waste
    • Reduce paper in a specific process
    Fleet/Facilities
    • Install rainwater collection tanks to clean vehicles
    • Workshop waste management, tracking down how oil/used tyres, etc are actually disposed
    • Promote improved isolation, the use of renewable energy sources and local construction materials in premises
    Transport
    • Consolidation of transport. Having a monthly container instead of multiple of shipments by plane
    Procurement
    • Review item specifications to make them more environmentally friendly and/or include environmental standards in tenders
    • Work with suppliers to increase social compliance
    • Engage with suppliers and other departments (i.e. assistance, premises, etc.) to reduce waste

    Advice and Assistance

I have an existing project/an idea in mind, how to best present it?

Have a look at how Kiran, from Lebanon, presented his project:

What is the name of the initiative you are submitting?

    The Seedlings Project

What problem related to sustainability are you trying to solve?

The Beirut port blast’s aftermath, the inflated prices and the economic and the financial crisis spurred Lebanese people to take up home-scale planting.

What is the proposed solution you want to test or share, and what are the results?

BEY EcoSec noticed the evolving practice and proposed a project to support it during the winter season – “The Seedlings Project”.

The collaboration with Quality Team and the Purchasers on doing market study resulted in technical and commercial insights, which played a crucial role in understanding the market and the project. Furthermore, it eased the selection process and the kick-off phase.A sustainable angle was also factored in by establishing a return system with the suppliers. Once the used plastic trays are collected and returned by Ecosec, the non-damaged trays will be discounted from the original price or credited for the forthcoming spring seedling season.

The main problem we met was the absence of existing reference nor prior experience to handle its supply chain cycle. These challenges were motivation’s source for the Quality Team and the Purchasers to do a thorough market study, using our existing tools (i.e. the QSE Approach for quality, social, and Environmental).

The collaboration’s outcome of this project was the distribution of 2 million seedlings and 3’000 agricultural tools to 1’500 family who were delighted to have healthy, bountiful harvests. Apart from the appreciation received for the project’s smooth execution, it was an enriching “learning by doing” experience.

Have a look at how Mohammed, from Kenya, presented his project:

What is the name of the initiative you are submitting?

      Shredded cardboard fillers

What problem related to sustainability are you trying to solve?

We were spending funds to purchase fillers.

What is the proposed solution you want to test or share, and what are the results?

Cardboard boxes were recycled. Shedder was used to shred the boxes and the chops were used for further packaging instead of the plastic bubbles for filling in empty spaces.
